Lawrence Frank, PhD

President and Founder

Dr. Frank, in addition to being UD4H's President and Founder, is a Professor in Urban Studies and Planning at the University of California San Diego. He specializes in the interaction between land use, travel behavior, physical activity, health, air quality, and climate change impacts of urban form policies. He has produced fundamental, ground-breaking research on the influence of neighborhood walkability on travel patterns and sustainability for 25 years. Dr. Frank is the top ranked planning academic in North America according to a recent Google Scholar ranking. He has led over $25 million in funded research and published over 300 peer reviewed articles and reports on these topics for a diverse range of journals such as Transportation and the Journal of the American Planning Association. 

James Chapman

Managing Principal

Mr. Jim Chapman has over 25 years of experience managing large-scale research projects, database development and analysis, and creating mode, health, and equity related performance measures and indicators to help inform policy and decision making at local, regional, and federal levels. Mr. Chapman is the lead project and business development director at UD4H. 

William Bachman, PhD

Technical Director

Dr. William Bachman is a Senior Geospatial Data Scientist with 25 years of experience directing research and developing solutions that estimate the community impact of changes to the built and natural environment. Dr. Bachman is the lead architect and developer of data and tools at UD4H (R, Shiny, React, ESRI) 

Xiao Shi, PhD

Senior Research Scientist

Dr. Xaio Shi is a Senior Research Scientist with over 10 years of experience in research and consulting on topics including built environment, transportation, health, and climate change. She specializes in curating urban digital twins and modeling complex environment-behavior relations using statistical and machine learning methods. Dr. Xiao leads all analysis and modeling at UD4H.
